Measuring a Horse for a Collar

Measuring a Horse for a Collar

The best way to check a horse for collar size is to try on several different sized collars. A good fitting collar should have just enough room to fit your fingers between the horse’s neck and the bottom inside of the collar.

If collars are not available to try on, two carpenter’s squares can be used to measure a horse for a collar. Measuring a horse for a collar is done at the dashed line ‘J’ in the diagram. The measurement is taken in front of the collar-bone from the top of the withers to the breast area. This is a straight line measurement. It does not follow the curve of the neck.

Take the two carpenter’s squares and form a letter ‘C’. Place the top of the ‘C’ in front of the withers and the bottom of the ‘C’ at the bottom of the neck as shown in the diagram, dashed line ‘J’. At the bottom of the ‘C’ allow for a little space to put your fingers between the horse’s neck and the bottom of the ‘C’. Now measure the distance between the top and bottom of the ‘C’. This should give the collar size.

Measuring Collar

To measure a collar, measure the inside of the collar from top to bottom. Refer to the dashed line ‘K’ in the diagram.
